Follow UsMAIDENHEAD, UK: IT leaders in large UK companies are struggling to put in place effective application management, according to new research from Quest Software Inc.
The fragmented applications market and in-house development are partly to blame for application management difficulties, as is the limited use of third-party application management software.
The survey polled 100 IT decision makers in companies of over 500 people, and asked them to cite the most troublesome applications to manage.
The most awkward applications are:
Custom Java: 48 percent
Other (sector specific apps): 43 percent
Custom using Microsoft.Net: 32 percent
Home grown: 30 percent
Conversely, the two easiest applications to manage were application behemoths Oracle (17 percent) and SAP (18 percent).
According to the research, two-thirds (66 percent) of organisations do not use third-party application performance management tools for their critical applications. One in five (20 percent) can’t afford to run them, and a further 17 percent do not realise such tools exist.
Nine out of 10 (89 percent) IT managers want to provide different views of the same performance management data sets to different users. Yet, almost two-thirds (64 percent) of IT decision-makers said their application performance management software could not deliver this key requirement.
“Good quality performance management tools increase application efficiency considerably. The research shows that the majority of organisations are not using toolsets which enable them to satisfy their key criteria of allowing different users to see the same data in different ways,” comments Hugh McEvoy, Manager, Product Management, Application Management, Quest Software.
“Organisations can greatly increase the effectiveness of their performance management initiatives if they invest in management tools which present the data in a clear and understandable way.”
