ENGLAND, UK: After more than 40 years of developments in a now mature replacement windows market with multiple product improvements and differences, the influence of legislation for home energy performance, and the need of the country to reduce carbon emissions influencing window materials, is choosing the right windows from the right company more becoming complicated than ever for property owners?

U-value, solar heat gain, effective heat loss, energy rating, energy efficient glass Vs other glass, finance options, and different frame colours. These plus decisions about which materials for frames will last the longest, different deals, which national or local window company to choose, and whether to go triple rather than double glazed are just some of the considerations for today's replacement window customer.

In a still uncertain housing market today's window customer also has to decide whether to go with the suggestions of popular property commentators like Phil Spencer and choose the window style that best suits the age and style of the original property, or just to go for a compromise between function, affordability and widest appeal such as plain white UPVC frames.

The economic situation is even causing some to question the ‘value adding' reasons for upgrading their home glazing or adding a conservatory.

The amount of information about double and triple glazing that is now available on the Internet provides potential customers with much needed help in understanding the technical and energy saving aspects of modern replacement windows. These Internet resources are now helping people of all ages who are looking to simplify the choice of what windows to buy and why, and who to buy them from, while avoiding telephone sales calls or visits to showrooms.

Common ways for customers to reduce risk, and to simplify their decision making processes include choosing only FENSA double glazing registered companies, or Glass and Glazing Federation (GGF) member companies, using the Internet to find recommendations and testimonials, and simply asking friends and family which company they used.

Dave Pearson of Swindon-based Window and Door Co., DA Windows, comments: "There are quite a few decisions to be made by home owners when they buy new windows and doors but I don't think it's too complicated. We're all bound to feel a bit more concerned when we're buying something fairly large that is going to affect the look and possibly aspects of the value of our home. We all really want to make the right decision and thankfully there is actually quite a lot of information available to help us to do that".

He thinks that focusing on the main key desired features and benefits, and picking a reputable local company is a good way forward for many home owners to simplify the process, and to increase the chances of making the right decision.

"Look at other houses nearby. It's likely they have a property of a similar age and it will help you to see what might look good for the windows and doors on your own property. Ask around. Maybe your friends and family know of a local window company who have done some good work for them. Look on the Internet, and don't be afraid to contact your local window company and ask questions.

"They may be able to easily and quickly answer some of the questions you have and they may even have special deals on. We work a lot in and around the Swindon area and people seem to really appreciate having a reputable local company who they've seen around and who they know have carried out a lot of good installations in the area."
