NEW DELHI, INDIA: Re-iterating its commitment towards building a digital India, Intel India today signed a Memorandum of Understanding with National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT) to enhance e-governance, education, innovation and to drive inclusive growth in the country.
The MoU was announced at the National Level NIELIT Workshop – 2014 in New Delhi on supporting ‘Digital India’ by skilling, scaling and speeding operations through public-private partnerships. The event was inaugurated by the minister for Communications & Information Technology, Ravi Shankar Prasad.
The MoU is part of the digital literacy program initiated by the Prime Ministers’ Office to make one member of each house hold digitally literate in India. To achieve scalable growth and access the impact of the initiative, NIELIT will be assessing the individuals on their digital literacy capability after the completion of the course.
Intel India would be instrumental in the creation of the certification and assessment portal for the digital literacy program of the Government of India. Under the Electronic System Design and Manufacturing (ESDM) policy, NIELIT is creating a course that will be delivered to 15,000 people in every state with the aim of skill development in the ESDM sector. Intel India will provide inputs to the specific modules of the ESDM content and support content creation of the course as well as promote the program through the ecosystem.
Speaking at the event, Debjani Ghosh, VP, Sales and Marketing Group, MD, Intel South Asia said, “Intel has always been committed to realizing the dream of a Digital India. Through our efforts in accelerating digital literacy in the country, we’ve already reached out to over 3 million citizens till date. We are proud to work with NIELIT in assessing the impact of digital literacy in the country as well as contributing to the ESDM course creation. This collaboration is a true demonstration of the government’s vision of fostering strong public private partnerships under the ‘Sabka Saath Sabka Vikas’ philosophy to realize the dream of a Digital India.”
Dr. Ashwini Kumar Sharma, MD, NIELIT said “The government’s aim of making one person e-literate in every household will convert India into a knowledge economy and empower citizens to compete in the global arena. To achieve this, it is crucial for the government and corporates to work together and create a sustainable model for digital education in the country. It is great to see technology leaders like Intel come forward and support the cause. We are sure that through this MoU, we will be able to work together to realize the vision of a Digital India.”
In August 2012, Intel India along with NASSCOM launched the National Digital Literacy Mission (NDLM) bringing together several players from the ecosystem to work towards a common goal of accelerating digital literacy in India. The Follow the Fiber program led by Intel under NDLM trained one member/household and achieved the goal of 100 percent digital literacy in the first three villages, Arain in Rajasthan, Naogang in North Tripura and Pravada in Andhra Pradesh, that received connectivity under the National Optic Fiber Network. Additionally through the Intel Learn Easy Steps digital literacy curriculum Intel has already reached out to over 3 million citizens in India.
