Have you gone to the store lately to buy a microprocessor? At least one hundred
million people have, according to Intel, which said its sales of boxed
processors reached the 100 million mark this week.
"This is an important milestone for our channel business because it
shows how far we have come in making Intel products broadly available for system
builders and resellers around the world," said Jim Yasso, vice president,
Intel Reseller Products Group. "This sales channel, which is very important
for reaching small businesses and supporting strong growth in emerging markets,
has shown its resilience during the recent economic downturn, and continues to
rapidly adopt new technology with a highly flexible business model."
Intel started selling boxed 60 MHz processors in 1994.The 100 millionth chip was
a 2GHz Pentium 4. The boxed chips we initially aimed at hobbyists and small
companies building small-volume custom PCs. Today 60,000 companies in 75
countries build desktop, mobile and server systems.
