Intel powers online train reservation system

NEW DELHI: Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation Ltd (IRCTC), a subsidiary of Indian Railways, has launched a new online Passenger Reservation System (PRS) running on Intel-based servers. The new service enables Indian Railways to provide value-added passenger services, including online booking, overseas ticket purchasing and also web-based tour itinerary planning.



"We believe that this Intel architecture-based solution, with its outstanding cost efficiency, robustness and reliability, was the best choice for web-enabling the Passenger Reservation System," said MN Chopra, Managing Director, IRCTC. "With the implementation of this highly scalable infrastructure, we are now geared to offer more options and higher levels of convenience to our passengers, both now and in the future."

The application and database management components run on four separate four-way servers powered by Pentium III Xeon processors and four more Pentium III processors power the web servers. The system links legacy applications to cost-effective, scalable and reliable Intel-based servers.
