CHENNAI: State governments should create better infrastructure facilities along with IT development, as lack of proper infrastructure acts as a major hurdle to IT/ITES development. Nasscom president Kiran Karnik stressed this while speaking at the inauguration of R R Towers III in Chennai. R R Towers III has been constructed in 16,000 sq ft at a cost of Rs 35 crore and is the third such IT park of R R Industries.

"India has grown as a major exporter of software and services and during the last fiscal Indian exports crossed the $17 billion mark," he said. He added that besides exports, IT is being widely used in the domestic market and the usage of IT by the non-IT companies has grown significantly, today.

Karnik also pointed out that the software and services revenue in India last year was around Rs 1,00,000 crore and currently, the industry employed about one million people.

He also appreciated Tamil Nadu government's initiative towards building better infrastructure, which has led to the faster growth of IT/ITeS in the state.

Speaking on the occasion, Tamil Nadu IT secretary Vivek Harinarain said, "The Tamil Nadu government is all set to roll out the Tamil Nadu State Wide Area Network (TNSWAN) soon, which would connect the 385 nodes of the state. A high-power committee has been formed to look into the networking of all the nodes, including 206 talukas, which would form a backbone network for government applications of voice, data, video and Internet."

"Tamil Nadu government has set up initiatives to build in data centers and common delivery centers, similar to that of an e-Seva model, which provides single points to the public for their various access needs," he observed.

Further, Harinarain said that the state has seen a 40 percent growth in exports during 2004-05 and exports are expected to reach Rs 11,000 crore as against the Rs 8,000 crore last year.
