CHENNAI, INDIA: Infosys has no plans to expand in West Bengal at this point, said Kris Gopalakrishnan, CEO and MD of Infosys Technologies and also the deputy chairman, CII Southern Region. He said this on the sidelines of Connect 2009, the premier ICT event organized by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in partnership with Government of Tamil Nadu, here on Friday.
While interacting with the media in the backdrop of the scrapping of the information technology (IT) township near Rajarhat in West Bengal, he said, “I think that project has run into trouble and we have actually gone slow on that because, due to the downturn in the industry, we did not need to expand at this point. We will wait for any new proposal, at that point we will decide how to take it.”
Wipro and Infosys, the two IT companies were to be provided 90 acres of land each in this IT township. However, the state government scrapped the project following a controversy regarding the land deal.
Kris pointed out that there is no need to pull out anything. “There is no offer; we don’t need to do anything.”
He further said that at this point Infosys was looking at expanding its existing centres in Chennai, Hyderabad and Bangalore. “We are hiring 18000 people who are selected by campus interviews. We are honouring commitments,” said Kris.
