BANGALORE: Infosys Technologies is in the process of building expertise in newer verticals. Its Domain Competency Group (DCG) has added healthcare, transportation and travel and tourism to its gamut of areas where it has been building intellectual properties. Insurance, banking, security, retail, manufacturing, utilities and energy form the existing six verticals in the DCG.
Apart from these, biotechnology has also been identified as a potential inclusion in the DCG. "There is a life sciences division within Infosys and DCG has identified biotech as another major vertical to gain competency for the company," said Infosys Senior Vice President P Balasubramanian.
Apart from customer wins and revenue contribution, building domain competency on a continuing basis and leveraging competency and expertise to deliver high value service to customer form the core objective of forming a vertical in DCG.
DCG, a vertical specialist forms the core contributor for all the business units in the company, along with Software Engineering and Technology (SET) Labs. "We get involved in sales pitches, understanding customer needs and framing the delivery model. We play a crucial role in prospective customer/project win. Since DCG is a vertical specialist for a global company, we enhance the understanding of a project both technologically and geographically," added Balasubramanian.
With DCG's objective of building domain competency on a continuing basis and leveraging competency and expertise to deliver high value service to customer, the team spends about 30 percent on prospect support and 40 percent on projects. While the remaining 30 percent is supported in competency building.
The group, started in October 1999 with 45 people, is expected to be 300 to 400 people by 2010. The team will be geographically dispersed and would consist of about 30 percent of non-Indian workforce. This would make Infosys a global company in the true sense.
