India to take stand on Huawei, ZTE soon

NEW DELHI, INDIA: In view of the recent US security committee report that termed two Chinese telecom equipment makers a threat to American national security, a meeting will be soon convened in India to decide whether or not Indian companies should go ahead with equipments manufactured from them.

Department of economic affairs has called a meeting with Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) to examine the recent US report.

Huawei and ZTE who are in dock on account of their Chinese origin and alleged relationship with its military, however, have denied all the allegations made against them in the report.

It is up to the officials now to find out whether these are a threat to national security and also whether Indian telecom operators should do business with only those who can provide them with 'made in India' equipments.

The two vendors, sometime back, had made it clear that they are ready to comply with the government's security norms if required in a bid to dispel fears of electronic espionage made against them.

Huawei's global chief security officer John Suffolk, while talking to media recently at the EWI Cyber Security summit in New Delhi, said that it is willing to offer unrestricted access to software source codes of all its products to the government. He also added it has shared source codes with other governments in the past.
