The purpose of the World Summit on the Information Society is to ensure that the benefits are accessible to all while promoting specific advantages in the areas like e-strategies, e-commerce, e-governance, e-health, education, literacy, cultural diversity, gender equality etc.

Speaking on the occasion, Maran said that the world vision of India on both communications and relationship was a basic tenet which one held dear to his heart in our country.

To substantiate this, he cited the vedic philosophy in Sanskrit as "Vasudhiva Kutumbakam" meaning that the universe is one family. "The very concept of World Summit on Information Society is an echo of this ancient wisdom", he added.

Maran further said that India Post was committed to a borderless Information Society where knowledge, information and thought-process moved across continents.

He hoped that the postage stamp, reflecting the theme of the Conference, would act as a symbol and be remembered along with the concept of Information Society brought out by the WSIS.
