India sees domestic ICTE at $400 bn by 2020

NEW DELHI, INDIA: Government of India is leveraging the domestic information and communication technology industry along with electronics manufacturing to grow it to a $400 billion industry by year 2020.

“There are ample opportunities going to come up for manufacturers in India. The government is devising ways to step up manufacturing. In the process, a number of packages are being planned to take the manufacturing industry up to $300-$400 billion from the current level of $20 billion,” said R Chandrashekhar, secretary, Department of Information Technology at the opening ceremony of 18th Convergence India here today.

Chandrasekhar added that the department saw the domestic demand for technology product in India to be at least $400 billion. The government is looking to meet domestic requirement of ICTE product from indigenous manufacturing.

He pointed out that the country is not only witnessing convergence at carrier level but also in end devices to catch benefits available in the network which is again an opportunity for companies to research and innovate.

“We are seeing that a lot of convergence is taking place at carrier level in terms of voice, video and data. This benefit of network is pushing demand for convergence on end devices, hence throwing up opportunity for manufacturers to research in the country and innovate,” said Chandrashekhar.

He further said that manufacturers should also focus on developing products and solutions that provide security to the network and data.

“Delivering features available in the network with security will generate huge opportunity for manufacturers in the country,” said the IT Secretary.
