‘India is at a strategic inflection point. It is a key player in the
technology industry and is capable of becoming a global IT leader. India
possesses the key advantages of high quality human resources, good GDP growth
and strong industry support. Intel is prepared to supply web services and
engineering resources to India,` said Michael Splinter, executive vice-president
(EVP), director, sales and marketing group while delivering a lecture on
`Winning in the Digital World` in Mumbai on Monday.
He added that India was specialized in software development contrary to
countries such as China and Taiwan which were involved more in IT hardware. He
said Intel would provide investment, products and solutions, which could help
Indian enterprises.
About opportunities in India, he said services, as a percentage of GDP, were
low and PC penetration & Internet users was also very low at three per
thousand persons.
Future Plans
Intel will concentrate on three products — database, networking and
services. Intel India plans to expand its network to 75 cities by 2002. Apart
from that, it will invest in education and community services. Intel India will
boost R&D expenditure. Its development center at Bangalore is the largest
non-manufacturing international center, which, at present, employs 800 plus
employees.
South Asia director, Avtar Saini said, ‘Widening distribution network in
India, creating relevance and excitement in Indian IT markets and moving from
features to profit are challenges before Intel India’. He added that low PC
penetration, a 40-50 per cent growth in SOHO market, growing Internet
subscribers and expanding telecom network were opportunities which Intel India
wanted to cash on.
