Entrepreneurship and academics are two-time tested friends. Consider the biggest example of all, the Silicon valley. It is considered the mecca of startups and in the middle of it lies Stanford University.

Similarly in India IITs are known for their emphasis on technical education and with their tough-to-crack admission exams have managed to curate the top students for their courses. This, in turn, assures a good pedigree of competitive thoroughbreds exiting the school every year.

The financial capital's IIT has about 145 funded startups, followed by IIT Delhi with 116 startups. IIT Kanpur comes 3rd with 89 funded startups followed by IIT Kharagpur (76), IIT Madras (62), IIT- Benares Hindu University (44), IIT Roorkee (31) and IIT Guwahati (25).

However in terms of market capitalization, since Flipkart's founders are from IIT Delhi, the Delhi institute leads the pack.

Some of the famous IIT Bombays startups include Junglee.com, SMS Gupshup, Ola Cabs, Webaroo, Mygola, Travel Triangle, Madrat Games, ideaforge, Housing.com etc
