Hughes Escorts Communications Ltd. (HECL) has launched a family of broadband

services for the enterprise segment called Directway via satellite transmission.

The service is to meet the increasing demand by customers for greater bandwidth

and will target dealers or the extended enterprise, enterprises, SME, cyber

cafés and institutions. The payment for these services would be on pay for use

basis per megabyte with both end connections.

The solutions include networking, managed network services and ASP services

and the value added services include file broadcast to multiple locations,

streaming audio and video, ticker services and newscast. Using Ku-Band

transponders on GE-1A, Directway provides high-speed access for browsing the

Internet and accessing Intranet applications. HECL is the most successful VSAT

service provider in India with more than 200 enterprise customers.

"The paradox in India is that it is a rather new market but price models

have reached that of the western countries. So with these services we intend to

provide high quality services at affordable costs, consistent quality, fast

implementation and greater reach. In satellite services there is no excess

capacity glut" said Ashish Choudhury, VP, HECL. In the next series of

Directway the company would launch the service for the home segment reaching

across the community and anywhere in the country.
