Funded by the Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DeitY), and with a budget estimated at Rs 83 crore for next five years, NCETIS is targeted at providing a research and development platform to the security forces in the country. It will focus on handling modern warfare techniques, enhancing intelligence services and improving internal security in the face of rising terror threats.

According to JS Deepak, Secretary, DeitY, the center will focus on cyber espionage, data security and digital weapons—core challenges for the government.

Work on unmanned aerial vehicles for surveillance and live reportage in the final stages of completion, said Professor Abhay Karandikar, Co-ordinator, NCETIS. The platform will allow experts to discuss and identify gaps across multiple agencies. Based on the feedback, the researchers will develop tangible products.

For instance, the CRPF has discussed issues of hidden land mines in Naxal hit areas for which advanced ground penetrating devices are required. And to help the forces, the institute has started work on detectors for land mines, cyber security, cryptology, video surveillance, image processing, monitoring of unmanned vehicles and biometric security.

Alok Joshi, Chairman, National Technical Research Organization (NTRO) said the current objective is to prevent online space for terror activities. “In cyber space, we need more work. Currently our knowledge on it is very limited,” the Indian Express quoted him as saying.

The technology will also help cyber security with the help of increased use of data analytics and data mining capacity across the police force.
