Prior to this significant meet, a number of countries and its government officials along with non-governmental bodies and environmental organizations worldwide are trying to formulate a consensus over setting up carbon emissions limits.

However, amid such a scenario, Hexaware Technologies, a provider of IT and BPO services and consulting, has developed a unique tool for carbon emission reporting, which could provide a great support across industries in controlling carbon discharge.

According to Reji George, Hexaware Technologies’ vice president and head – Travel, Transportation, Hospitality and Logistics (TTHL) Practice, the carbon emission limits and norms will have greater impact particularly on sectors like manufacturing, airlines, transport and logistics – including carriers on rails, roads and seas.

“In fact, the carbon dioxide emissions from aircrafts including passengers and cargo planes are the highest and it is growing exponentially. Even, the European Union (EU) has this strict proposal of taxing airlines that exceeds carbon emission limits,” George told CyberMedia News in Mumbai.

“Such situation demands a technology or tool that helps industries in keeping constant watch on carbon emissions. In fact, Hexaware’s innovative web-based tool for carbon discharge offers monitoring, reporting and evaluating of carbon footprints on regularly basis,” he added.

Early this year, the company developed and deployed its carbon reporting tool for a European rail firm. According to George, it took about 5-6 months in onsite development of tool with the help of analysts and techno-domain experts and the system will go live within a few months.

The tool is built on Microsoft SQL platform; however, he pointed out that it can be built on other technology platforms and can be supported with existing legacy systems of the organizations.

It is based on data model and undertakes numerous algorithms, permutations and combinations on the basis of data captured across the systems. For instance, the tool takes into account several key factors such as the distance between destinations or points, number of seats and class, weight of passengers and cargo, etc. On this basis it monitors, evaluates and generates reports on carbon emission.

The report helps to understand the levels of carbon discharge on a particular route, fuel requirements, etc., thus helping the organization in determining the amount of carbon release. Moreover, the tool can be customized with compliant and regulations based on regions.

On the development of such unique tool, George commented, “Our interest in developing technology or tools that have greater impact on lives of people remains at the forefront and we always want work to set standards in the world. And in the coming years, the tool will be must for all industries.”

He said the pressure on industries such as airlines, logistics and transportation to go green was huge, so as the cost involved in that process. And it is a growing threat to their existence. “Hence it would be more feasible and practical to utilize carbon reporting tool,” George concluded.
