BANGALORE, INDIA: Two weeks after the video of a young woman being molested in Guwahati went viral, a man claiming to be Amar Jyoti Kalita has surrendered in Varanasi, according to media reports.
The local police believes that the man is indeed Kalita; officers say he matches photos, and was vague when answering questions put to him. The police from Assam is traveling to Varanasi to identify him, according to an NDTV report.
Amar Jyoti Kalita had been on the run since July 9, when he was seen in the video wearing a red t-shirt, trying to rip off the shirt of the victim, provoking national outrage.
The reporter in question Gaurab Jyoti Neog, who apparently is a close friend of Kalita's, was arrested last week.
The news, if true, might provide happiness and vindication to crores of Indians, who had been commenting on social media, praying for the arrest of Amar Jyoti Kalita.
Some people who commented today on social media, seemed to be concerned that Amar Jyoti Kalita might flee from the location if the news of him being traced in Kolkata is so widely publicized. However, it seems like all fears have been put to rest.
Internet and social media has played a huge role in arresting the previous 12 accused, who's pictures were circulated widely on the Web.
The police had announced that they would flash Amar Jyoti's photo on local channels and offer a reward for any information that leads to his arrest.
Amar Jyoti Kalita refers to himself as James Bond in his Facebook profile and in one his photos, he is wearing the same red t-shirt he wore in the molestation video.
