The domestic IT and ITeS market in India grew by 26% in CY 2005 over CY 2004. A milestone was also achieved during the period when the IT and ITeS revenue grew by over Rs. 50,000 crores in the domestic arena, according to IDC.

IT vendors are increasingly 'verticalising' their offerings as business priorities of enterprise shift in a fast globalising world, says Monoj Chugh, President, EMC India and SAARC. Talking to CIOL, Chugh said 'big ticket' spenders like BFSi, IT/ ITes, Telecom and manufacturing continue to drive spending towards building IT infrastructure.

The storage market shows the fastest growth rate in the IT sector and significantly in mid-tier as more than 60-65 per cent is realising the importance of storage, says Chugh.

Talking about the future of the industry, Chugh says that the industry is here to stay and is in fact gathering momentum.

Indicating the growth drivers, Chugh, a veteran with over 20 years industry experience, says with a phenomenon increase of over 70 per cent in information – in both structured and unstructured form - will lead the growth in the storage market in the IT sector and internet.

Growth is happening at a rapid pace in the small and medium business (SMB) segment, especially in network storage, he said. Giving reasons for his optimism, Chugh said organisations are looking to consolidate and also look at cost of ownership (TCO) and compliance which is a worldwide phenomenon becomes relevant. Government regulations too will be a trigger to the growth, he added.

Among the verticals in the SMB segment he expects BFSi, manufacturing and IT and ITeS will push the market in future.

Chugh also stated that data storage is slowly moving from blocks to files and now to objects where there is more information about information. Giving example of meta data, he said one can leverage from the standardisation of meta data usage for better access. Citing the Mumbai floods last years and other natural calamities in the recent past as examples, another growth area is back up to disk along with replication for data protection and virtualisation, he pointed out.

Archival will also play a crucial role in the storage space as regulation will drive demand for archival information especially in the area of insurance and BFSi, he said.
