A weeklong programme, Green Dreamz 2008 started with a day’s visit for the students to India’s first authorized e-waste recycling facility in Karnataka. Based on this, the various competitions were held on safe e-waste disposal in the schools for the entire week. About 150 school children from all over Bangalore participated in the event.

“We had poster making, collage, quizzes as interclass competitions in our school, and we had two days to prepare for this skit on e-waste management”, said a student from the winning school. “Yes we are aware of e-waste now, and will go spread the word in our parents and school. We have now been taught to segregate e-waste separately from ordinary waste. Saahas comes periodically to collect the waste,” he added.

According to the organisers, each school has been asked to observe 'one week' as the e-weste week during the month of February.

The Green Dreamz 2008 on the theme of e-waste management, started with a recycling art competition won by Baldwin Girls High School, wherein, students were given a chance to create recycled art pieces from e-waste materials like CDs, batteries and floppies. Then they had a thematic treasure hunt, where the trophy went to St. Joseph Boys High School followed by theme presentation, which was a 10 minute slot given to each school to express themselves in any form on “E-waste Management”. A skit performed by Mirambika School for the New, bagged their second trophy.

Maclean S. Raphael, vice president, HR and management support, WeP Pheripherals Ltd., said, " We as a company are committed towards an eco-friendly, cost effective and satisfactory e-waste management system for Bangalore. Our green range of products are the first of its kind recycled electronic products. The overwhelming response from the students is one step towards the realization of our goal.It has been our endeavour to raise awareness about safe disposal of e-waste and e-recycling and to make children eco-consultants."
