MWC'18: Google unveils Scorecard and Calculator to improve page speed on mobiles

At the MWC 2018 event, Google announced two tools to help improve the page speed for mobiles. The search engine giant unveiled Speed Scorecard, which is a comparison tool and Impact Calculator, which calculates the revenue impact of speed for a site.

The Speed Scorecard lets users compare the speed of their mobile site with thousands of sites from 12 countries across the globe. The Scorecard is powered by the Chrome User Experience Report, which features "the largest database of real-user latency data for how Chrome users experience popular destinations on the web." It shows the speeds of thousands of sites from 12 countries across the world, says Google.

In a blog post, Google says that most businesses struggle with slow mobile sites, which often serve as a hindrance to the user experience: “In fact, 53 percent of visits are abandoned if a mobile site takes more than three seconds to load, according to Google data from 2016.”

The second tool is an Impact Calculator that lets users punch in key metrics like current site speed, average monthly visitors, average order value, and conversion rate to determine the impact that load times have on revenue. For instance, businesses can look at how much they could potentially gain by reducing the load time by two seconds versus one second.
