BANGALORE: Google Deskbar is a downloadable software from Google, for Windows users. This deskbar appears as a search box in the taskbar of your Windows desktop. You can search for information on the Internet without opening a browser, even as you continue to work on the mail client or Word application you are using. The search results are not displayed in a browser, instead, the deskbar display results in a small window in the lower right-hand side of the screen.

The Google Deskbar gives you the ability to search the web without forcing you to stop the work you're doing. You don't need to leave the document you're editing to find a fact, check your spelling or use a calculator. The Google Deskbar supports keyboard commands that enable you to conduct a search on text you've selected using Google web search (Control+Alt+G), Google News search (Control+N), Google image search (Control+I) or Froogle (Control+F), or to display definitions for the highlighted term that Google has found on the web (Control+D). Your search results are displayed in a mini-viewer pane that rises from the taskbar and automatically closes when you click back to your previous window.

Google had a similar downloadable toolbar for search, called the Google Toolbar. However, unlike the Google Deskbar that lives on your desktop, the Google Toolbar resides in your browser.

You can download the Google deskbar here.
