CIOL Get ready for an ’immersive’ experience with YouTube’s new VR app

If you have Google's new Pixel phone and Daydream view, then you can watch all of YouTube's standard content and videos shot with 360-degree cameras in virtual reality mode. Sounds interesting, right!

YouTube has launched a new VR app to allow viewers to watch YouTube’s standard content in the app’s theatre mode in a virtual movie screen. The best part is that even if the videos weren’t created for VR viewing, this new VR app will turn them into an immersive experience.

The problem, however, is that currently only Pixel owners are favoured with such experience.

In a blog post, Youtube said, "We want to continue to provide you with new ways to engage with the world and with your community, and we believe virtual reality will play an important role in the future of storytelling."

"And today you can experience all of this amazing content in a more immersive way with the brand new YouTube VR app, available first on Daydream. This new standalone app was built from the ground up and optimized for VR," the post further adds.

According to Ben Popper from The Verge, "Right now the app presents you with a screen much bigger than a household TV floating about 10 feet in front of you." Basically, in the theatre mode, the video itself fills the main portion of the screen. One side of the screen displays the Information on the video like the title and description, whereas the other side of the screen displays your queue so you can see what’s coming up next.

Player controls can be found down at the bottom of the screen. And the app will also help you watch and browse at the same time.

Furthermore, the VR app also includes features like voice search and a signed in experience so you can follow the channels you subscribe to, check out your playlists and more.

"The Company is investing in the technology by seeding the network with VR content. It has been helping YouTube creators gain access to VR equipment in YouTube Spaces, as well as learn how to use it to film in 360 degrees," Google said.
