Fujitsu to launch broadband project in UK: Nikkei

BANGALORE, INDIA: Fujitsu Ltd said it will build an optical fiber network capable of providing broadband services to some 5 million homes in the rural parts of the United Kingdom, the Nikkei business daily reported.    

Fujitsu will join with British telecommunications companies Virgin Media Inc and TalkTalk Telecom Group Plc and U.S. network equipment giant Cisco Systems Inc for the project, the daily reported.

The cost of the project is estimated at 2 billion pounds, or roughly 270 billion yen, it said. The British government is expected to provide around 500 million pounds in subsidies as part of its policy of helping to spread telecom infrastructure in rural areas, the daily reported.
