MUMBAI: X-Internet-'Executable and Extended Internet', that's what Forrester has named it. Whether X-Internet should be initially implemented in traditional industries or consumers should be the early adopters? Who should drive it- CIO or a business head? These are some of the pertinent questions on 'X-Internet and business profitability' that were discussed in a CIOL Enterprise Connect forum. CIOL president, E Abraham Mathew moderated the discussion.

Elaborating on 'X-Internet', Forrester Research's VP-research, Navi Radjou said that X-Internet pushes connectivity past computers to other interactive devices, such as cell phones and televisions, and from there to a range of consumer products and applications -- from cars to fields of corn to cans of soup.

"As the X-Internet will evolve, we will see a fundamental change in the way business is done, and Internet applications are built and presented. It enables delivery of browser-based applications that deliver the functionality and performance of client and server applications," he added.

Shaw Wallace AVP-IT, CS Subramaniam felt that adoption of X-Internet is still a matter of concern. "The infrastructure set-up and mindset for such technology change is a must", he insisted. He emphasized that X-Internet is already happening one way or the other and is all set to make a big impact on our lives.

In the banking sector X-Internet is happening in a different way. IDBI bank CTO, Sanjay Sharma said that earlier the use of Internet in the banking industry was completely different. Today communication through mobile devices is possible in the banking industry and there is a complete change in the Internet usage nowadays.

Ambuja Cement VP-IT Bihag Lalaji that as the prices of devices will come down, the usage of X-Internet will increase. He also said that the target audience for such devices and applications are the 'Youth'. Rajdou also echoed the same view.

Rajdou also insisted on the facts that, like the US and other countries, the early adopters of X-Internet should be traditional industries such as agriculture. Most of the CIOs were of the opinion that the usage of such technology would increase, if it gets used in consumer goods. Also, in enterprises both-business heads and CIOs should drive such technologies.
