PANAJI, INDIA: Immigration officials from Europe and Asia have recommended a multinational portal on the European job market to tackle increasing illegal migration across the globe.

One of the recommendations made by the delegates attending the eighth Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) conference on management of migratory flows here in Goa, was to start a comprehensive job portal catering to the European continent, conference chairman G. Gurucharan told reporters.

"Delegates from Europe have come up with the proposal to start a job portal," Gurucharan said.

"The portal will help us organize legal immigration. One of our main aims is to establish direct contact between potential employers and potential employees," Gurucharan, joint secretary with the ministry of overseas Indian affairs, said.

He said the move is for the elimination of fraudulent job recruiters from the scene.

"The best way to do this is by having the portal and promoting job fairs," he said.

Gurucharan said that the job portal would be started under the aegis of the ASEM, which he said would help bridge the two continents.

The ASEM, over the last 12 years, has been the main multilateral channel for communication between Asia and Europe in the area of migration through the conference of the directors general of immigration.

Around 30 delegates from 12 Asian countries and 30 from 18 European countries attended the 8th ASEM conference that ended Wednesday.

The 9th ASEM conference will be held next year at Brussels, Belgium.
