Sales spiel is a routine that is not new to any CIO. But while a CIO deals with salesmen on one side, does he also have to play one - specially if it's about convincing a CEO, CFO or users? Is the act easy or tough? Do CIOs like making a pitch?

In my career and experience so far, if you can show something's value in a proper and prepared manner, the senior management gives a 'yes' immediately. All they ask is the 'show-me' points. Once you have explained and shown how reasonable an investment would be, things get faster approvals, something which is critical for us, as delays many times, can not be afforded.

Our last IT initiative in SAP platform demonstrates that the decision process involves a team that entails CFO, SCM and control guys, users etc. So everybody is involved at relevant stages and we all looked at it in a very scientific and unbiased manner of assessment.
