Wipro designs new healthcare solution on Atom

BANGALORE, INDIA: Wipro Technologies, the IT service business of Wipro Limited, today announced the launch of the next generation medical gateway solution powered by Intel's Atom processor.

The new solution is an intelligent embedded platform which enable patients, doctors and other healthcare professionals to monitor, track and manage healthcare information from a remote location.

“With this design, Wipro is targeting medical device OEMs, who can use this solution and bundle it with any device they manufacture or customize it as per the industry needs,” said Manimaran, general manager, Medical Devices, Wipro Technologies.

The solution enable real-time clinical review by automatically capturing vital data from multiple medical devices such as blood pressure monitors, glucose meters, pedometers, weighing scales etc available with the patients.

These devices can connect to the solution via wired or wireless technologies using both standard based and proprietary protocols.

The solution, after capturing the data from the devices, transfer them into a recognizable format which can then be sent to a server or a hospital information management system where doctors can access them via Internet. The analyzed result on the received data can, later, be sent back to the patient in the same way.

“Health conscious aging population in the developed countries have a better access to remote patient monitoring technologies, than those in the developing countries, due to high cost involved. So with the solution powered by Intel Atom, Wipro aims to bridge that gap by enabling OEMs to build low cost product for the emerging markets like India,” Manimaran said.

He added that the company is already in talks with some OEMs in the US and Europe and some healthcare solution providers in India. However, he would not disclose the details.

This is the second medical solution in India which is powered by Intel Atom, the first solution being from KTwo, a Bangalore based product company.

“This is yet another example of how Intel architecture enables ground-breaking applications and the Intel India Design House program provides hardware and software support and training to get products to the market. The new solution from Wipro will be highly beneficial in improving healthcare facilities in India,” said Sanat Rao, Intel's marketing director for emerging market.
