Of the business owners who took part in the survey, 37.8 percent of business owners said their biggest outgoing was spent on their energy bills. This comes as George Osborne promises to reduce energy costs in the Budget 2014 yesterday and Ofgem announced up to 300,000 Businesses across the UK are owed £204m in credit from closed accounts by the ‘Big 6' energy companies last month.

Christian Nellemann, CEO and founder of XLN, supports the hard-hit: "With energy costs soaring, many small business owners are struggling to make ends meet to ensure their bills are paid. It seems highly unjust that these energy giants have pocketed money which is owed to small businesses across the UK in their thousands.

"The very same small businesses who represent the very lifeblood of economic recovery in the UK. This is yet another clear reason why we have to break the crippling stranglehold of the Big 6."
