New Delhi, INDIA: Employees being asked to leave companies due to ‘poor performance’ is good for the industry, Nasscom Chief, Som Mittal has said.

“Employees being asked by the company management to leave the organization and seek other avenues due to their inability to perform or poor performance is good for the Indian IT industry as a whole. This will ‘refine’ the skilled workforce in the industry. IT companies should also focus on identifying the reasons for some of the employees’ poor performance and offer then adequate training,” Mittal told CyberMedia News here. He was reacting to news reports of major IT companies asking some of their ‘employees to seek other avenues,’ following ‘poor performance,’ in the appraisals.

Talking to CyberMedia News, Narendra Puppala, senior vice president, Global HR at Birlasoft Inc denied reports of employees being asked to leave. “This is a normal process and even the number of people leaving the company will be known only after April, when the appraisal cycle of over 3500 of the total employees will be over. The company’s attrition levels have been at 14 to 17 per cent over the last two years and we expect to continue this year too,” he said.

“In a situation where recruiting skilled talent is a big issue, none of the Indian companies will resort to measures contrary to the scenario. If companies do so, then the performance of the company is in question and not of the employees,” he added.

TCS Chairman and MD, S Ramadorai, had clarified on Thursday last that the appraisal process was very much normal “Only non-performers were told to quit the company and this is natural. These non-performers have been given ample time to look for alternate employment and we also help them find it,” he said.

However, the Nasscom chief opined that companies should invest more in training and retaining good talent. “Though people are leaving, there is a huge talent pool available in the country. At least for once, India’s population comes handy in this case,” he said in a lighter vein.
