BANGALORE: EMC Corporation has set up its third research and development center in Bangalore, after Hopkinton in the US and Cork in Ireland. The company plans to double its staff strength from 20 within the next 12 months.

The center was formed by acquiring the assets of Bangalore based Sanware, the Indian subsidiary of US based Sanwise-a storage solutions development center. EMC absorbed all the employees of Sanware.

"India is a strategic center for us and setting up this center gives us the ability to recruit the best and brightest from a high concentration of extremely skilled software engineers," remarked EMC, Senior Vice President Storage Infrastructure Software, Chris Gahagan.

The center in India is expected to focus on storage operation management with a `significant’ investment. The company had spent about $800 million last year on R&D activities, out of which 75 percent was on software and the rest on hardware.
