SAN FRANCISCO, USA: Greenpeace activists have urged social networking major Facebook to go green by using renewable energy and by “unfriending” coal energy.

The green crusaders also claimed that Facebook users have joined with it to call on the social networking giant to start powering its services with renewable energy instead of coal and nuclear power.

As part of this campaign a few Greenpeace activists rallied outside Facebook headquarters, according to AFP.

“We want them to 'unfriend' coal and 'Like' green energy,” Greenpeace spokesman Daniel Kessler said after the rally. “We think a lot of Facebook employees will be on our side, so we are trying to recruit them.”

The international environmental group set up a large computer screen to display comments streaming in from around the world in response to a Facebook post urging the firm to join an energy revolution.

“Since we hit 50,000 so fast, let's set the bar higher and go for 100,000 comments in 24 hours. The clock is ticking click here to add your comment to the Greenpeace Facebook World Record now!,” said the website of Greenpeace on Wednesday, which has set up a " target="_blank">Facebook page, calling for Facebook users around the world to establish a Guinness World Record for the most comments to a Facebook post in 24 hours.

The page has already created the record, said Greenpeace. Eleven hours into its latest attempt, Greenpeace secured a Guinness World Record for the most comments in 24 hours on a Facebook post. The previous record was 50,000. Greenpeace's simple message, "Unfriend coal," currently has over 65,000 comments.

Last week Facebook unveiled new data centers, which it claimed to be greener and cheaper, to more efficiently power online services.

Those who support this cause may post their comment here to strengthen the campaign.
