Commissioned by SUSE, IDC's report features answers from Vivian Tero, program director for IDC's Governance, Risk and Compliance Infrastructure research, and Rob Young, research manager for IDC's Enterprise System Management Software service. It will help IT organizations looking for solutions that reduce ongoing operating expenses and at the same time lower the risk of security and regulatory compliance violations.

Sabine Soellheim, solution and product marketing manager for SUSE said: "Our own enterprise Linux customers are using systems management software to increase security and maintain compliance, helping them better predict and contain costs which gives them a leg up in an increasingly competitive global marketplace."

According to Tero and Young, systems management software can reduce security risks by continuously and proactively scanning data center networks in order to identify, prioritize, remediate and report on vulnerabilities such as outdated software and hardware configurations.

It can also automate the discovery, inventory and configuration of networked devices (servers, operating systems, applications, databases) across physical and virtual environments.
