BANGALORE: The Bluetooth Special Interest Group recently announced an 'addendum' to version 1.2 of Bluetooth specifications, called Enhanced Data Rate (EDR). According to a study by Gratner EDR will increase the wireless technology's data transmission rates and battery life. Said an online report.

With this new specification a maximum data rate of 2.1 Mbps, which is three times the current rate can be achieved. It also enables the transmission of larger data packets over the Bluetooth radio link.

As of today Bluetooth enabled devices are widely popular, and by mid 2005, EDR will be the mainstream Bluetooth standard, giving it added momentum. EDR will enable longer battery life, faster image downloads, multiple simultaneous links for Bluetooth devices like mice, PDAs, handsets etc.

Though the specification has still not been certified but companies like Broadcom. CSR and Royal Philips have announced products based on it.
