Cloud file syncing and sharing service Dropbox announced the news in a note to Hackpad users. Igor Kofman, founder of Hackpad wrote, "I’m writing to let you know we’ll be shutting down Hackpad on July 19."

However, the discontinuation news came only after Dropbox introduced its Paper collaborative notetaking app and launched it out of beta. So now, Dropbox will automatically migrate Hackpad documents to Dropbox Paper on July 19. But users can opt out also, and export the files.

“I’m so grateful for all the enthusiasm and feedback from the Hackpad community over the last several years, and I’m excited to share what’s coming next,” Kofman wrote.

“That feedback has been really helpful for designing Dropbox Paper — a product inspired by the Hackpad community,” he added.

Notably, there’s also an importing tool that Kofman came up with that “helps convert your pads to Paper docs.”

Kofman further wrote, “Paper takes many of Hackpad’s best features — like instant collaboration, comments, and real-time editing — and adds a lot more, including additional security features, faster search, and more visibility for teams,”

Kofman now leads the Dropbox Paper team.

Dropbox Paper for Android has 100,000 downloads in the Google Play Store, while Dropbox itself has more than 500 million registered users.
