DisplyLink backs SMIC to tap PC vendors

BEIJING, CHINA: Along with bagging orders for USB video output chips from the US-based supplier for the first-tier vendors DisplayLink, Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC) has been said to have indirectly entered the supply chains of Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics (LGE), Acer and Asustek Computer.

Industry watchers opine that the orders from DisplayLink will allow SMIC to continue with its growing sales contribution from 0.13-micron. The company had recently revealed that 0.13-micron accounted for 31 per cent of its total sales in the first quarter of 2009, compared to 25 per cent in the year ago period. The

Semiconductor Manufacturing International had successfully got on to commercial production of USB graphics chips designed by DisplayLink at its 130nm (0.13-micron) process node a while ago.

A report in this regard added that DisplayLink's new USB graphics chip family, which allows the connection of various visual computing devices to displays with a USB connection, is already deployed in Samsung's new SyncMaster LapFit LD190G and LD220G USB companion monitors and the Lenovo USB-to-DVI Monitor Adapter.

During last May, DisplayLink had made it public that it had shipped over one million USB graphics semiconductors, embedded in more than 30 consumer and business products.

It also had brought out a wide range of USB graphics products including the USB-connected monitors from Acer, Asustek, LGE, Mitsubishi and Samsung.
