What is threatening is the fact that the Web is gradually embracing the fretting Doomsday- the December 21, 2012- prophecies. Many Webizens are worried over the rumors that range from coming of the Planet X or Nibiru, Cosmophobia, Solar Outbursts, Pole Shift or Planet Alignments- all of them though debunked by NASA. "Dec. 21, 2012, won't be the end of the world as we know, however, it will be another winter solstice," says NASA. http://www.nasa.gov/topics/earth/features/2012.html

Twitter accounts such as @DoomsdayPrepper, @DiariesofDoom and @DDayCountdown are all adding fuel to the rumors. Facebook too have pages that include 'Dec 21, 2012 End of the World' and '3 things that I'll complete just in case the world really ends.'

Weblinks, dedicated portals and Web 2.0- all are adding hype, and attributions to NASA, forced the latter to clarify it over Google+ Hangout and Facebook. NASA, concerning about the fictional campaign over Internet, on November 28 said that Internet campaign is hoax, aimed at frightening people.

NASA also has gone to the extent of putting up a Web interface over its official portal with a 'Questions and Answers' section. NASA astrobiologist David Morrison in response to rumors said that many young individuals are attempting sucide in the wake of Mayan Apocalypse rumors.

"The Earth has always been subject to impacts by comets and asteroids, although big hits are very rare. The last big impact was 65 million years ago, and that led to the extinction of the dinosaurs. Today NASA astronomers are carrying out a survey called the Spaceguard Survey to find any large near-Earth asteroids long before they hit. We have already determined that there are no threatening asteroids as large as the one that killed the dinosaurs," says NASA.

For Websites such as www.december212012.com, the alleged calamitous end is turning out to be a brisk business, feels Delhi-based IT professional and Internet-savvy Kanwaldeep Singh Grewal.

"Though, I don't believe in doomsday, the rumors are terrifying and exciting at the same time. I check social networks such as Facebook and YouTube till late in the night to catch up with new updates," he said.
