DBT scheme for LPG subsidy records 1 million transactions

NEW DELHI, INDIA: A whopping Rs. 41 crore has been transferred to the bank accounts of LPG consumers under the Direct Benefit Transfer for LPG (DBTL) Scheme.

The DBTL scheme that was rolled out in 18 districts on June 6, this year, has recorded more than 1 million direct cash transfers to the bank accounts of the consumers, said a press release from the ministry of petroleum & natural gas.

"About 67 lakh consumers from 18 districts are getting subsidy on LPG cylinders in their Aadhaar linked bank accounts," said a release and further added, The Direct Benefit Transfers for LPG (liquified petroleum gas) scheme would benefit over 6.7 million LPG Consumers in these districts.

"As per the scheme all Aadhaar linked domestic LPG consumers are getting an advance in their bank account (6 lakhs transactions so far) as soon as they book their first subsidized cylinder, before delivery. On the delivery of the first subsidized cylinder, the next subsidy (4 lakhs transactions so far) again gets transferred in their bank account, which is available for the purchase of next subsidized cylinder at market rate," as per an official press release issued by the government.

Several steps were adopted by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG), Ministry of Finance (MOF) and UIDAI to expand the reach of DBTL scheme.

MoPNG, Ministry of finance and UIDAI had taken several steps to convince their consumers to link Aadhaar numbers to their respective bank accounts.

The three government bodies had released advertisement in leading dailies, provided drop boxes to collect Bank-Aadhaar linking forms, cash memos were stamped to communicate need for Aadhaar linkage to get subsidy in bank account. Besides that, delivery boy were informing customers about need for Aadhaar linking while delivering refills.

From September 1, this year, LPG cylinders will be sold to all domestic LPG consumers at market price but the subsidy will be transferred to only those who have linked Aadhaar number to LPG consumer number and Bank account. Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) have provided the facility on their websites to check whether the Aadhaar number has been linked to LPG consumer number/bank account.
