Delivering the inaugural address at the IT-ITES Industry Academia Meet organized at the Bannari Amman Institute of Technology here, he said, “We need education to expand rapidly but what's concerning is the quality of people turned out by our educational institutes. Engineering colleges should improve the quality of education and this can be achieved by bringing in good faculty, encouraging students to opt for an academic career by pursuing higher education and research in IT and development of soft skills.”

Karnik said a collaborative effort was required from the industry and academic institutions to provide knowledge. “It's not sufficient for students to possess technical skills alone; soft skills like communication, teamwork, confidence and the ability to look at totality are much required and these are the skills which the industry seeks most from students,” he added.

Later, speaking to the media, Karnik advocated the setting up of special education zones (SEZ) on the lines of Special export zones for higher education, wherein large corporate should be encouraged to set up professional colleges.
