CSR shouldn''t be confused with philanthropy: Nilekani
The ambit of personal philanthrophy outgrows CSR
Pratima Harigunani

MUMBAI: Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and personal philanthropy are two different aspects, Nandan M Nilekani, CEO of Infosys said.

CSR happens when a company fulfills its ethical and social obligations. For example, when a BPO enables access of employment opportunities to the disadvantaged or disabled, he explained while speaking on CSR at the Nasscom Leadership Forum here.

Infosys Foundation commits one per cent of its profits to social causes. This is philanthropy, he added.

Nilekani said that CSR's purview can include improved access of technology for the less privileged as well as volunteering time and minds for solutions that matter for society.

He noted that technology has made indirect contributions too, like making the tax collections go up as people stop evading taxes for the fear that every money transaction is in the scrutiny of technology.

At the same time, the industry needs to turn attention to issues of income division and equitable growth, he added.
