Notes On the Industry Summary Table
-
The category of
servers includes RISC/Unix and PC servers. RISC/Unix servers have been
segmented into high-end, medium and low-end severs. PC servers are
Intel-based dedicated servers shipped with Windows NT, Novell NetWare, Linux
or SCO Unix network operating systems. Values are based on vendor-reported
figures and not end-user prices.
-
Workstations have
been differentiated as Intel-based and RISC/Unix-based. Alpha/NT
workstations have also been included. Values are based on vendor-reported
figures and not end-user prices.
-
Single-user systems
include desktops or network clients and portables. Total industry values are
not based on vendor reported figures. An average sales value has been used
for top ten companies and a lower figure for the remaining companies. Since
vendor figures include application software, peripherals, networking
components and services along with the systems, they cannot be used directly
to compute industry totals. The balance vendor revenues have been adjusted
in packaged software, networking and services.
-
Peripherals include
impact printers, laser printers and inkjet printers. Other peripherals
include monitors, keyboards, scanners, hard disk drives, floppy drives, CD
drives, CD writers, pointing devices and power supply devices. Dumb
terminals have also been included in other peripherals.
-
The networking
industry includes network interface cards, hubs, routers, switches, modems,
multiplexers, structured cabling and RAS.
-
This industry total
has been introduced to make convenient comparisons with packaged software
and services. The hardware industry total includes systems, peripherals and
networking.
-
Others include
miscellaneous hardware items, special projects, imports, consumables and
accessories not included in peripherals. As networking and packaged software
data has been revised for 1998-99, the overall adjustment is reflected in
others.
-
Services now consist
of three major components-hardware services, software services and training
services. Part of vendor revenue from systems has been adjusted in this
industry total.
-
Hardware services
include facilities management, own systems maintenance and third-party
maintenance.
-
Software services
include customized software development, turnkey projects and consulting.
-
A turnkey project is
the sum total of systems integration and network integration services. These
two important integration services are clubbed together, as vendors are
sometimes unable to provide their revenues separately. Moreover, vendor
revenues from integration services are usually not fully reported as they
are built into equipment revenue.
-
Education services
include individual and corporate training.
