BANGALORE: Sun Microsystems, India, has announced that it has increased its market share in the RISC/UNIX server market in India in Q1 2002, further extending its lead over the competition. According to IDC's (International Data Corporation) Q1 2002 Enterprise Server Tracker Report, Sun’s RISC/UNIX server revenue market share in India grew to 48.4 per cent in Q1 2002 from the 34.6 per cent achieved in the full year 2001. On a year-on-year basis, Sun's RISC/UNIX server revenues increased 20.5 per cent in Q1 2002 compared to the same quarter last year. Sun's unit shipment market share was at an impressive 64.3 per cent. In the same IDC report, Sun was also reflected as the dominant vendor in the high-end RISC/UNIX server category, which comprises of servers priced above $1 million. In fact, Sun was the only vendor in India that sold servers in the high-end category in Q1 2002. "With this achievement in the high-end RISC/UNIX server category, Sun now leads in all three server categories - entry, midrange and high-end," said Sun Microsystems, India, managing director, Bhaskar Pramanik. "Our high-end flagship Sun Fire 15K servers are clearly preferred over offerings from HP and IBM to be the choice of enterprises to power today's high-end data centers." "Sun's first quarter performance in India was outstanding", said Rajnish Arora - Sr. Program Manager - Enterprise Servers and Workstations, IDC Asia/Pacific.
