BANGALORE: Sasken Technology, a Bangalore based company, will be working in association with Intel to develop products for the Wireless Next Generation Services (WiNGS). Intel Corporation president and CEO Craig Barrett visited Sasken in which Intel has a small stake and was showcased the software capability and technological strength of Sasken in the area of WiNGS.
The joint research and development will be engaged in the areas of Next Generation Wireless Technologies encompassing both network elements and user equipments, optical wireless solutions for personal area networks and multimedia content retrieval systems. While Intel will provide the semi-conductor, Sasken will supplement it with software application for the WiNGS.
Sasken chairman and CEO Rajiv C Mody said, "Semiconductor and software application will go hand in hand. A winning plan will be that of a semiconductor architecture and design and well established manufacturing and domain knowledge in wireless and broadband telecom. Intel and Sasken are poised as the winning combination with the expertise and strength in semiconductor and software application for the telecom industry, respectively."
The process of designing a chipset for telecommunication applications involves the design of a semiconductor platform and associated algorithms. The design of algorithms and the chip architecture are strongly inter-related and the design process is usually termed as co-design.
Sasken is also looking at private placements from corporate sectors and financial institutions. Although the size of the investment was not disclosed, it was informed that it will be used to repay the term loan acquired for the new 2 lakh sq ft corporate office in Bangalore and also for acquisitions of company. The company closed it fiscal year 2000-01 with a revenue of $ 31.13 million. Offering a hybrid model of services and products, the company feels for the current fiscal, the services contribution to the revenue will drop from 53 per cent, to about 40 per cent while the contributions to the revenue from products will increase.
