Dares to dream - S Ramadorai
Friday, June 24, 2005
The "master of the ship" and "captain of its soul", TCS chief Ramadorai weaves big plans for the company.

The simmering information technology explosion in 1996, ran parallel with the appointment of S Ramadorai as CEO of India's biggest IT company Tata Consultancy Services, throwing him under the limelight. Under his leadership, the company grew multi-fold to its current size of more than two billion dollars. For the Tatas, Ram is the "master of the ship" and "captain of its soul."

Originally hailing from Nagpur, Ram grew up in Delhi where his father worked with the Indian audits and accounts service department. He studied physics at the University of Delhi, from where he headed south to Bangalore to study communication technology at the Indian Institute of Science. After graduating in 1968, Ram briefly joined the Physical Research Lab at Ahmedabad, but soon left to pursue higher studies at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) from where he obtained his masters in computer science.

Once through with his studies, Ram joined NCR, one of the most successful companies of its time. But, wanted to come back to India and his dream came true when his father told him that the Tata group was looking for 'people who could work on computers.'
In Nov 1971, Ram was interviewed by AH Tobaccowala, president, Tata Inc., who was based in New York. Ram was employed with TCS in Bombay on February 23, 1972, the start of a long and eventful journey...

Ramadorai skillfully leveraged the technology boom to take TCS to great heights making it the largest Indian IT company by revenue. He envisions TCS to be one among the global Top 10 consulting organizations by 2010.

He considers himself fortunate for having had the opportunity to interact with great achievers the likes of JRD Tata, Nani Palkhivala, and FC Kohli, from who he learnt to 'walk on the tight rope of life.'

Married to Mala, a reputed academician and a musician in her own right, the couple have a son Tarun, who recently completed his doctorate in Business Economics from Harvard. The proud father attriibutes his most memorable moment to his son's acheivement.

At his leisure one can find Ram absorbed in classical Hindustani and Carnatic music or taking long walks.
