BANGALORE: BMC Software is planning to invest $5.5 million by the beginning of next year in India to increase its offshore R&D activities. The company has so far invested $6.5 million in its Indian operations. The company's plans include expansions to make room for 1,500 people in the years ahead. The current headcount of BMC 637 and the company expects this number to touch the 1,000 mark in financial year 2006. According to BMC senior VP and CFO George Harrington, the company is negotiating for a new facility and would soon move the entire staff to a new campus by the end of September 2005. Once completed, the new center will spread over 1,71,000 sq ft. As an ODC, BMC Software India provides R&D and internal IT project support to its parent company. BMC Software Inc. R&D senior VP Dan Barnea said that the R&D projects for the SMS, Remedy, Magic and Marimba lines of business have been initiated, with BMC India having more ownership of the products. “We started with core competencies in IT and R&D and have subsequently expanded to other areas including corporate development, field support, business intelligence and customer support. BMC is now firming up plans to establish some the HR and finance back office functions in Pune,” he further informed. Around one third of the company's business comes from Mainframe and the Business Service Management (BSM) growth is expected in double digits. Harrington said that BSM would be the main growth strategy for the company. On the Indian market, he said that even as it is currently small, the potential for growth in the APAC is the highest.
