NEW DELHI: In its bid to capitalize on the huge availability of high quality talent in the software arena - US based, high performance computing company Silicon Graphics Inc (SGI) is looking forward to having its R&D activity being done from India.

"It is amazing to see the way India has moved up in the software arena. We would like to explore possibilities of having our R&D activity in India. I cannot give you a date but, India may well be our next destination for R&D," informed SGI chairman and CEO Robert R Bishop.

Presently, the company has its R&D centers based in the US, Australia and Israel. "We have close to 700 people working in all these R&D centers worldwide and this figure is also likely to grow as we move forward," Bishop said.

According to SGI estimates, the overall size of the scientific computing market in India is between $ 350 million - $400 million and the company has 10 percent of this market under its belt. "We are looking forward to doubling our market share in India within the next five years time," he added.

To grow its market share, the company is planning to increase the number of channel partners and working with its five tier-one partners to increase the number of tier-two partners within the region.

"We have appointed Redington as our national distributor and so far our focus has been on larger cities but now we will move to smaller cities and increase our market penetration with the help of channel partnerships," SGI, India MD Prasad V Medury.
