For archrivals in the silicon and processor battlefield, AMD and Intel, another battle is breathing up.

It is the battle for the Quad-Core crown.

While Intel launched it first in 2006, AMD has been sweating for a better answer that can make up for the late entry with the launch of its offering, code-named ‘Barcelona’ that is finally (after much anticipation and announcements earlier) arriving in 2007.

Would AMD Barcelona manage a small lead over Intel's Clovertown and recuperate some market share in the high-end server market? Will Barcelona live-up to its launch-date this time and if so, is Intel ready to strike back?

Also, AMD's Barcelona is considered by some to be a "truer" quad-core design versus Intel's, which is reportedly, two dual-core Xeon's clubbed to work together as four computing cores. AMD Opteron had also, according to a few industry sources, earlier demonstrated substantial edge over Intel in performance in the server market, which led to some price ripples on the rival.

But then, Intel has already seeded the market with Clovertown and channel action. To add up to that, there is this much-hyped Intel’s marketing muscle to combat too.

So...

Will AMD be able to take a lead over Intel or would it be a mere face-saving feat? Would Intel deliver the blow again?

The year 2007 seems to be an interesting Armageddon for Intel and AMD. Here’s a face-off between Rajesh Gupta, director, sales and marketing group, Intel India and Arvind Chandrasekar, AMD’s business development manager.
