CIOL:Tech Mahindra clicks on IPV6

PUNE: Tech Mahindra is channelising its vision and development team in some new technology areas and IPv6 figures the top among them.

Shankar Allimatti, vice president, NGN Solutions & Services, Tech Mahindra said that among the new technology initiatives at the company, IPv6 (Internet Protocol Version 6) is a thrust area, given its attractive potential of enabling individuals to have their own IP address.

While the likes of Cisco will take on the mantle of IPv6, Tech Mahindra expects to leverage its edge at the implementation level. “It could be the next Y2K wave as it replaces IPv4 (Internet Protocol Version 4) as another disruptive technology. We can be present at the implementation level as well as at the transition gap between IPv4 and IPv6,” Allimatti explained.

IPv6, a network layer protocol for packet-switched Internet works, is designated as the successor of IPv4, the current version of the Internet Protocol. Its main advantage is the increase in the number of addresses available for networked devices. IPv4 supports about 4.3 billion addresses, which is inadequate for giving one address to every person, or for supporting embedded and portable devices. IPv6, is said to be able to support a much larger number of addresses.

He expects something concrete out of this technology in the next one and a half years. The company has a pool of 600 to 650 resources across its seven COEs and currently 25 to 30 people are dedicated to IPV6. “At Tech Mahindra Centre Of Excellence, we pursue new technologies on the horizon, incubate them both at the thought level and at the delivery level and then let them take off on the right track,” he added at the sidelines of launch of IPTV lab with Sun Microsystems today.

Among other new things on its plate, IMS or IP Multimedia Subsystem and WiMax are the hot areas. “We are addressing the question – Will WiMax be able to completely replace WiFi and how,” is all Allimatti can hint for now.
