CIOL:Wireless Pune in first gear

PUNE: Intel Technology Pvt. Ltd, along with Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and Microsense, today launched the "Unwire Pune" project, making that city the first one in the country to have commercial meshed Wi-fi and WiMax deployment.

Next to follow could be cities like Bangalore, Ahmedabad, Nagpur, Mysore, Jaipur and some parts of Uttarakhand as reflected in the RFP (Request For Proposal) hinted by Intel.

Intel has been associated as the technical consultant (on architecture) for this project which is a PPP (Private-Public Partnership) initiative under PMC (Pune Municipal Corporation). It has now been put under Phase I of deployment with Microsense that has been selected as the broadband and network service partner.

PMC Commissioner Dr Nitin Kareer informed that the first phase will cover wireless connectivity radius of 25 sq kms and would be completed in around four months.

"The entire project targets around 250 sq kms and a timeline of around 16 months. It will also target 30 PMC schools initially and around 300 schools eventually. The idea behind the project is good Internet access for private, corporate, administrative sectors and areas like education and e-governance. Rates would be affordable at Rs250 per month but the first phase would be free for experience zones. Commercial roll-outs would be done after feedback and scaled up henceforth," he said.

Speed would range between an initial 256 kbps and even over 2 mbps at a later stage and the network would also be equipped for voice besides exploring various revenue and ISP cost models. Investment is to the tune of Rs100 crore over a period of two years.

"Current spectrums for the project are 2.4, 3.3,3.4 and 5.8 ghz, which has been recently de-licensed by GoI," said MD of Microsense, S Kailasanathan.

However, the need for additional spectrum allocation for WiMax was also mentioned.

R Sivakumar, MD, Intel (South Asia), pointed out, "It is a good commercially viable model. But there is a long way to go."
