CIOL:RSA focuses on possible phishing areas

PUNE: Log collection, compliance reporting and automation of audit trails would be the thrust of companies like RSA security that currently taps 28 per cent of its revenues from the finance and banking vertical.

“Audit trails entail a mammoth task and thus have scope for enhanced security and automation. Our new offerings would take care of the same,” Srikiran Raghavan, regional head, RSA, said.

Also coming up are new technologies that would enable integration and active information access via touch points like pen drives. This would allow multiple ways for aligning with a customer’s touch point thus allowing access any online, web-enabled transaction.

The trend in security industry is slowly witnessing a shift on the mobile side too. RSA, is part of OMA (Online Mobile Alliance) and Raghavan observes that as cell-operators move from voice to data and content, new security dimensions would emerge.

Future technologies in mobile security would increasingly cover areas like digital rights management and embedded authentication capability within the phone. In the case of the latter, the device is converted into a form factor to be stored in the phone itself.

“It can be used over all Java-enabled phones,” he said.

He added that retailer loyalty programmes, social community sites, personal emails as other vulnerable phishing areas besides banks and credit card transactions.

“Phishers are trying to reach every possible source of gathering composite information and exploiting the same.”

However, a major motive for phishers is still money. “Though personal information espionage can have many repercussions, but as of now, we have not seen much of that around.”

Raghvan opined that while compliance imperatives have been instrumental in driving security business in banking vertical, direct and proportionate correlations are difficult to ascertain.

“Compliance is not just about a technology change. It entails key changes and investments in more critical areas like people and processes. While in US correlations between regulations and technology adoption have been established, in India the case is different. Regulations are making gradual but definitive progress which is in sync with the maturity and growth curve of the industry too,” he further said.

RSA is a 20-year old company that was acquired by EMC and is currently its security arm. Its current basket covers identity assurance and access control, encryption and key management, compliance and security information management and fraud protection.
