CIOL:Convergence yet to emerge in India Baijal

NEW DELHI: “Any new technology coming to India will flourish,” remarked Pradip Baijal former chairman of Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) at the panel discussion on ‛Convergence- The future, fueling the Indian Economy’ at the Convergence India 2007, which kicked off here today.

Baijal opined that technology could not be regulated and urged regulators to allow the entry of any new technology,

“Convergence has not yet emerged in India. The regulator has also not initiated on the unified license, which has been a long-standing demand of the industry. We need to relax the regulation to encourage emerging technologies in the telecom sector,” he said.

Speaking about the debate on the allocation of the spectrum to operators, Baijal said that there should not be different regulations on allocation of spectrum for CDMA and GSM operators.

“There are different guidelines being announced by the government on allocation of spectrum for the CDMA and the GSM operators which has been an issue of debate. To fuel the growth in the Indian telecom space there should be a standard guideline for the operators on spectrum allocation, which will help the industry to flourish,” he added.

He said that India should follow the free entry of technology and said that the industry was skeptical on the entry fee on 3G.

SN Zindal, director general, Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) said that new technology is the key to growth for the industry.
